A lady in a faded gingham dress and her husband, dressed ina homespun threadbare suit, stepped off the train in Boston, and walked timidlywithout an appointment into the president of Harvard’s outer office. Thesecretary could tell in a moment that such backwoods country folk had notbusiness at Harvard, and probably didn’t even deserve to be in Cambridge. Shefrowned. “We want to see the president,”the man said softly. “He’ll be busy all day,”the secretary snapped. “We’ll wait,”thelady replied.

For hours, the secretary ignoredthem, hoping that the couple would finally become discouraged and go away. Theydidn’t. And the secretary grew frustrated and finally decided to disturb thepresident. “Maybe if they just see you for a few minutes, they’llleave,”she told him. He signed in exasperation and nodded. Someone of hisimportance obviously didn’t have the time to spend with nobodies, but hedetested gingham and homespun suits cluttering his office.

The president, stern-faced with dignity, strutted towardthe couple. The lady told him, “We had a son that attended Harvard for oneyear. He loved Harvard, and was very happy here. But about a yearago, he was accidentally killed. And my husband and I would like to erect amemorial to him somewhere on campus.” The president wasn’t touched, andshe was shocked, “Madam,” he said gruffly, “we can’t put up astatue for every person who attended Harvard and died, if we did, this placewould look like a cemetery.”

Oh, nothe lady explained quickly, “we don’t want toerect a statue. We thought we would give a building to Harvard.” Thepresident rolled his eyes. He glanced at the gingham dress and homespun suit,and then exclaimed, “A building! Do you have and earthly idea how much abuilding costs? We haveover seven and a half million dollars in the physical plant atHarvard.

For a moment the lady was silent. The president waspleased. He could get rid of them now. The lady turned to her husband and saidquietly. ” Is that all it costs to start a university? Why don’t we juststart our own? “Her husband nodded. The president’s face wilted inconfusion and bewilderment. Mr. and Mrs. Leland Stanford walked away, travelingto Palo Alto, California where they established the university that bears theirname — a memorial to a son that Harvard no longer cared about.
